Artissima Chloé Royer
The sculptural installations of Chloé Royer (1989, Paris) inhabit spaces like elegant otherworldly creatures that convey movement, as if frozen in time during a moment of calmly floating around. Royer works with a wide range of materials that she reworks meticulously, combining and contrasting them, to eventually merge them together in a balanced sculptural act. Asymmetrical equilibrium is a leitmotiv in her work – it recurs in the slender verticality of some sculptures, and in the fragility of the materials of others.
The postures of the sculptures that are inanimate yet imbued with a notion of agency often closely allude to ensembles encountered in nature or simply outdoors – from colorful life underwater around corals to forests with rarefied, tall tendrils and trees to motley groupings of human beings. However, blurring boundaries between life form and object, the unclassifiable hybrid bodies she creates, disrupt taxonomies and unsettle perception, while simultaneously raising the spectator’s curiosity and encouraging them to closer observe a plethora of details that reveal true craftmanship. Ultimately, the work affirms resilience through adaptation and transformation – like ever-evolving creatures that are continuously reshaped by shifting environments. In this poetic power of metamorphosis, perhaps, lies a glimpse of the unintelligible eternal. The sculptural installations of Chloé Royer (1989, Paris) inhabit spaces like elegant otherworldly creatures that convey movement, as if frozen in time during a moment of calmly floating around.
